Chrome Extensions you Wish You Knew Back in College

Extensions are small software programs that can modify and enhance the functionality of the Chrome browser. There are lots of great extensions out there, the most famous would include AdBlock, the pinterest save button, google keep, etc. Just years ago, I started having an interest on looking for extensions, I can say that sometimes, i would spend hours just looking for new extensions to try. After trying lots of them, I can now make list of the best extensions I think that would be of really great help for students.

1. Block and Focus

Have your thesis due after three days? Or having a test the next day? But somehow, your brain decided that it's a good time now to binge read everything in Reddit and watch your favorite youtube channel's videos. I've experience this many times now and have caused lots of problems to me such as sleepless nights or late homeworks/projects which led to very low grades.

Block and Focus is perfect for all those chronic procrastinators out there. You can block websites that distracts you for a chosen amount of time and you can even chose a break time if you want. You can also pause the extension and apply the pomodoro technique.

2. Select and Speak

Select and Speak is a text to speech extension. You can highlight for example, a paragraph, right click then select 'speak selected text', it will read the text for you even while you're not on that website anymore (as long as the tab is open), it will continue playing. This is great for multi-tasking or if your eyes simply had enough and needs rest. You also have the power to configure the voice being used and the speed or rate at which the voice speaks.

3. Cite This For Me: Web Citer

This one's probably my favorite here. For all those college students out there doing their thesis, I can't recommend this extension enough. What otherwise would take you minutes in writing a proper reference, this extension could do it in seconds with just 1 click. It offers referencing in APA, Chicago, MLA or Harvard style depending on your prof's instructions. Referencing is pretty much a pain in the ass and takes time to make, but with these extensions, all you have to do is click the icon whenever you want to cite an article and then it will generate the citation for you and you can just copy it into your document.

4. Google Dictionary

Ever read a wikipedia article and can't understand because of all those unfamiliar words, then you individually searches for the meaning of those words? It's quite time consuming and irritating. With Google Dictionary, you can easily look up a word's definition, no need to open new tabs, you can just simply double click a word and pop up will appear with that word's definition. Google Dictionary also offers automatic translation of foreign words to the language of your choice.

5. Grammarly

With this extension, you'll never have to suffer from humiliation from misspelled words or wrong grammars as you browse the net. It will tell you your mistakes and grammatical errors and helps you fix them easily. It could also suggest alternative words that you could use to and would also suggest the proper words to be used instead of the one you chose to. This is great when you are making a report or taking to higher ups. It's been trusted by more than 10 000 000 people world wide and counting. Just in case you don't know, Grammarly also has a computer app.

BONUS:

Facebook Chat Privacy

Now you don't have to worry about accidentally clicking on a chat box that you have been trying to avoid for months now. This extension "unseens" and removes the "is typing" mark when you have actually seen the message. No more awkward and unwanted conversations!
